Once I tried organizing my books after color. It looked really cool, but was very impractical, so now i do author surname as well.

Right now I've got a shelf for Canadian lit, one for American lit, one for Brit lit, one for French lit and one for Spanish lit. I keep my hardcovers and non-fiction books in a different bookcase. My shelves are classified by publisher, and then author surname.

I keep my paperbacks in different shelf than hardcovers. Besides that they are randomly. How ever they fit the best into the bookshelves or look the best.

Isa, that is insane in a good way. I could never do that. Not enough type-A in me, I guess.
Mine are generally in stacks or or on the shelf in a few different groups. They're also on my nightstand table or on the floor by my bed.
1) Books I love and will keep forever. 2) Books I plan to read. 3) Books that I wouldn't mind getting rid of.

My shelves are classified by publisher, and then author surname. I basically have the geographic organizational structure, too. American lit, Brit lit, etc. (we even have a Michigan authors shelf). Within that, it's a free for all although we do keep authors together. And some sections don't fit into the general scheme. Like we have a nonfiction shelf and a memoir section.

I think I kind of organize them in: Books I bought recently and really like, books I've bought before and I still kind of like, but not as much as the ones I bought more recently, books I read when I was little, schoolbooks, books I don't really care about (anymore). And then on one shelf I organize them on size... cos I like the way that looks, and I don't have a lot of books, so I can always find it back.

Mine aren't organized. Completely random. The only things that have flow are that my Jane Austens are together, my Lauren Willig books are together, and Harry Potter is together. Everything else, fall where you will.
However, I'm thinking of re doing it all and going alphabetical.

I´ve changed my system. It used to be colour but now I´ve got lit from english- speaking countries and authors, classics, children´s and YA, non-fiction, German, and ethnic/ multicultural fiction.

I have organized them alphabetically (anthologies before a), but I generally separate fiction from non-fiction.
