I'm on my fourth year at university, studying English, Spanish and history, and I have two years left. In theory I'm going to become a high school teacher, but I'm not sure if that's really what I want to do. I know that I want to work with people who are the high school age, but I'd love to work in a juvie, or at a school in some bad area, where one can really make a difference. Of course, that's very idealistic of me, and I'd probably be scared out of my wits after half a day at such a place, but anyway, it would be nice to try.
However, I talked to this supercool translator the other day, and her job sounds amazing. She translates novels, and very often she gets to travel to wherever the novel is set, to get the background right and everything. She had just spent a month in London and were going to Berlin for two months over summer. So translating sounds fun too.

I think translating would be so interesting, too. However, you might get stuck working on computer manuals or government or something -- my mom used to be an editor at a translation firm.

I work in social media marketing, I'm enjoying it and I love my new company. It's really fun to be encouraged to use Facebook and Twitter at work. As for my career goals - I want to be a librarian. It's a major switch from what I'm doing now, but it's what I'd like to do. I hope to start my Masters in library science soon - I'm actually hoping to start spring semester of next year. I'm going to go to Pratt Institute, it's right in Manhattan so it's very easy for me to get there for night classes. I'm really hoping to start very soon, but my overall goal is to at least be in school for it by the time I'm 30, so I've got a little over 5 years.

I know, how some of you feel about not knowing for sure what to do next. I'm going to be starting my last year of university and so it's one of those moments when you decide if you want to go get a job or go to grad school or some sort of professional school.
I would like to go to law school, for International Law, but I'm starting to be really interested in International Relations and Policy and would love to work with an organization like the CIA or, like my professor suggested, the EU. However, these are really hard places to get into so who knows.

Well, Pratt's actually the only place I really can get my degree from, while I'm living here. So I'm very happy that it's a good program! I don't want to get my degree entirely online - I felt like I got nothing from the online classes I took as an undergrad. And the other schools in NYC that offer a Lib Science program are not in Manhattan, they are in other burroughs. So my commute would be an absolute nightmare. Pratt's very expensive though - I'm going to have to start seriously looking at financial aide soon.

Zelda that's great, sounds exciting! I know, how some of you feel about not knowing for sure what to do next. I'm going to be starting my last year of university and so it's one of those moments when you decide if you want to go get a job or go to grad school or some sort of professional school. However, these are really hard places to get into so who knows. I'm really interested in International Law and foreign policy too. I'm doing a few international law subjects this year and so far they're my favourite. It's pretty hard to get into those areas here in Australia though because everyone wants to be in them Well I had my two graduate program interviews this week: The Department of Finance and Deregulation and The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. I think they went pretty well, but it's hard to tell. They have a pretty large group component so I got to meet tons of interesting people from all different backgrounds, which was cool. This week I have a two day long interview and assessment centre for an intelligence type organisation (not like a spy or anything, all office work). I've applied for over 20 different government programs so far for next year and I've gotten to the next stage for these three, rejections from from five and the rest I haven't heard back from. Every law firm graduate program I've applied for I've been rejected by. Getting work in a firm seems next to impossible in the current climate, but I'm not sure I want that anyway.

Well I went for my assessment centre for that intelligence body (which was one largely concerned with satellite intelligence). It involved a full day of assessments and interviews and then the next day the group of us applicants found out who was staying on for the next stage of interviews with a psychologist. I didn't make it They said I went really well but they thought with my skills base and interests I would be better suited to another intelligence organisation more concerned with policy work than analyst work or somewhere else in the public service but that I wasn't really suited to them. Which I sort of suspected in the beginning but was pleasantly surprised by getting so far in the stages of recruitment process. I'm a little bit bummed because this was the only job I'd gotten to the next stage of that involved opportunities for attending international conferences and doing overseas secondments. Plus the application dates for the departments they recommended for me have already closed. But I got into the top 60 applicants out of 600 so I guess that's something. Plus it's not like I have decided its what I specifically want to do, but it sounded cool.

At least you know which programs you should apply for next year, and it's really cool that you made it so far in the process.
