My friend just got an e-book for Christmas and I wanted to know your thoughts about it. Do you think it is a good idea? Or that it is just going to replace books? What do you guys think?

I hate the idea. It's probably good for textbooks, etc., so the copies don't get ruined, but there's something about curling up in bed with a book that can never be replaced (even by the Kindle).

I don't know, I think I'd prefer "normal" books but I've never read an e-book...and perhaps it'd be interesting to try.

I have the Sony reader and I love it! I was running out of space to put books. Hardcover books would get left on my shelves because I didn't want to carry another bag around to read it. Traveling is much easier because I can put hundreds of books on the reader. I will still buy certain books (favorites, collections and books not available). In school I used my Palm pilot because reading 4 books at a time was a lot of books to carry around.
I remember when digital music downloads became available, and how I thought I would always buy the cd's. I started buying them online, and never buy cd's. All my cd's are put away in boxes because it saves space.

I just got the kindle for christmas and I love it. You can make the print bigger on it and its light weight. I already have 3 books on it and I am going to add more. I think e- books are a good idea. You also save money. Buying a book at a bookstore can get expensive. When you buy a book on kindle it takes less than a minute to download on to the kindle.

I see where you are coming from, nothing like seeing how far you have to go and everything, and I don't think a lot can take the place of a book. But I think the e-book sounds cool. I don't know what to think, but there are a lot of pros to it. Like the traveling is easier, and it is also better for the environment, not so many trees dying because of all the books. Still, I am sitting on the fence about it.

Yes on the reader I can put approx 160, and it also has extra memory card slots like a digital camera.

This is why you buy used books and go to the library. I don't know. It just seems so far removed from anything tangible that it bothers me. Staring at a screen for too long makes me feel like I'm in a different world, and not a good one.

bookaddict brings up a good point, a few years ago I also didn't think I'd be downloading music as much as I do now, but I was never crazy about CDs the way I am about books. For the moment, the idea of E-books does not sound appealing to me at all because I love to physically hold a book in my hands, but I guess you should never say never?

I go back and forth. I really want a Kindle but I really like to just hold books and flip the pages.

I'm not sure I'd use it, I suffer from eye strain quite a lot, and while reading is obviously bad if you have eye strain, I think doing it off a screen would be worse than from a book. But I haven't tried any of the little reader devices so I'm not sure.

I've never used one and I don't picture myself using one, but that could change.
