Yeah I agree. I support Obama, but I just think it's a little naive how so many people (especially 18-25 yr olds I know) believe he'll fix everything. To me, Obama is not the solution - He is the inspiration. It is truly up to us. I was watching a talk show the other day where the host made a crack at Obama's speech and how it was reminiscent of Bob The Builder's theme (Bob the Builder - can we fix it? Bob the Builder - YES WE CAN!") haha

Today was fantastic! We spent almost the entire day at school watching the inauguration coverage. The entire school was buzzing, being primarily democratic and liberal. I am SO excited to finally have Bush out of the office. I love Obama! I don't think he is an immediate fix or anything, but it's nice to finally have someone different running the country, and, if nothing else, it has really brought the people of our country together (or the majority of them, at least).

I'll share some pictures from today once I upload them. Unfortunately, we didn't have a great view. But it was amazing to be there.

I wanted to ask you about your opinion of Guantanamo, do you think Barack Obama's decision is right or not? And why?

I think it was the right decision. The reason that Guantanamo existed was because we couldn't have done it on American soil. I think that if the law prevents you from doing something at home, you shouldn't get around it by doing it abroad. I know that there are people at Guantanamo that we don't want released back into the world. But everyone should get due process and you can't just label someone an enemy combatant (in an ambiguous war) and detain them forever. They should either get the rights that anyone detained in the US should get or else they should be dealt with by a world court or another country's court.
I was listening to a piece on NPR the other day where the speaker was saying that the tough thing is figuring out how to manipulate the law to detain people without charging them of some crime. I began shouting at him that it's tough because you can't do it. I believe too much in the process that is due to everyone - even criminals and terrorists.
Our whole justice system is based on the principle that we would rather have 99 guilty men go free than imprison one innocent man. If you aren't going to charge someone with a crime, you can't detain them indefinitely.

Our whole justice system is based on the principle that we would rather have 99 guilty men go free than imprison one innocent man. If you aren't going to charge someone with a crime, you can't detain them indefinitely. You're absolutely right, put in prison someone who's innocent, it's terrible and it shouldn't happen, but to release a criminal, or a terrorist, it's the same foolish thing, in my opinion. I just can't get over the fact that someone who killed somebody, or maybe many people, should be released. But it's really hard to find out who's innocent and who's not (it reminded me a film Chicago). I really don't know if the decision is right or not, I should find out more information about that and not to look on it only from one side, I guess.

You should definitely research it if it is an issue you are interested in because that's the only way that you will get a good opinion. It's a tough issue. I look at it mostly as a lawyer (and a bit as a former campaign staffer), I've read the Supreme Court cases and I've heard civil rights attorneys speak about it, , so I have a perspective that is going to be different from yours.
I'm actually intrigued by the whole anti-terroist/civil liberties dichotomy. My husband tends to take the other side so we have some interesting debates.
