Yeah, basically I think that before the 1965 Voting Rights Act, even though they were technically allowed to vote, it was very difficult for African-Americans to do so.

Yes, Barack Obama is president!!!! And that also means that I get my life back and I can visit here again.
I'm so glad I had the experience of working on the campaign. And I'm so glad that we won. I could just look at the map and look at the little blue Florida all day. And we won my county as well by 40,000 votes or so (Kerry lost Pinellas county in 2004 by 200 votes).
I have no idea how to get back to normal life though. I feel a little lost...

Congrats and THANK YOU for all your hard work Michelle! I was thinking of you on election night. I was thinking, "Florida MUST go blue for Michelle!"

I'm glad Obama won, it's definately time for a change and some fresh ideas. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens under his leadership. Not that it's all about race, but I think it's really great that a country like America in which race can be a really big divide finally has its first black president. It must be mindblowing and a really powerful feeling for black people who can remember not being permitted to vote. ;D I'm excited at how far we've come, too, but I'd like to point out that technically, African Americans (men) have been allowed to vote since the year 1870 (although some states tried to stop them by using literacy tests as late as the 1960s). I am very excited to have our first racially different president in our country's history. But, as excited as I am, I can't help but think that Obama is not like most other African Americans in the US. His father is African, his mother is American--he is biracial, not black. Since this is how he came to be African American, he did not descend from slaves like most of the African American population. Nevertheless, I am very excited that a Democrat and a racially different man (since they've all been white before) will be in charge

But he hasn't really started doing anything yet, besides starting to pick his cabinet. I will have to wait and see in 2012 if I want him to be re-elected. I think he will do a great job, but I can't say I will vote for him for sure in 4 years yet (I'm optimistic though)

lol, I have to agree with Kristie, it's a bit early to say I'd like him to get re-elected since he hasn't really done anything yet. I do hope people realize that the first few months really won't be easy for him because the Republicans left the US in quite a mess - and they still have a few more weeks to mess things up even more! I think Obama will do a good job, but I hope people don't see him as "the saviour" and end up crucifying him when they realize he can't do miracles...

He's definitely not going to be able to fix everything right away - I think most of his supporters realize this. I'm very encouraged though about how fast he's jumped into preparing for the job. You'd think he'd want a vacation after 20+ solid months of campaigning. But he's just as busy getting organized and is already holding meetings about how to improve the economy. I think he's really ready to work hard. He also sat down with George Bush today, which is very rapid compared to other recent presidential transitions. Also, I think the reason why my first reaction to a woman in 2012 is that there's been speculation that Sarah Palin might run herself then. My first reaction to that is "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" There's not much that Barack could do that would make me vote for Sarah Palin over him. (Knock on wood).
