In Canada, parents are free to give whichever last name they want, or even both, whether they are married or not. When the parents are married, it's still tradition to give the father's name. If the parents aren't married but they're still a couple, most will give both last names to their child. But if the father isn't really in the picture, as is the case with Chris, usually the mother will give her own last name to the baby.

Leigh would be her middle name. Lorelai would be considered her Christian name and Leigh is just her middle name.
It's alright that her last name is Gilmore. In America, depending on the situation of the parents, when a child is born out of marriage, the mother can choose to give her last name or the father's. My nephew, for instance, has his father's last name because my sister and him are quite serious in their relationship. Lorelai probably picked Gilmore because she didn't plan on marrying Christopher--that way neither Lorelai was a Hayden.

Plus, then we'd have to call it A Gilmore and A Hayden Girl.
