I was going through the pages and it wasn't until I got to like page 8 or so that I finally found a book that I have read. There are many that I own and are just waiting to be picked up. But I gave up going through the list. I have it bookmarked though to go through later.

Thanks for the link. I'd tried to find a better list that was easier to read, but I just couldn't find one. And that list has it split up into the century parts which is nice.

They have the book in our library and made a special stand for it, with some books that are in the list. I'm going to go through it when I'm in the library the next time, you can't take it home anyways

Nick Hornby commented on this list in his May Column in the Believer: "The annoying thing about reading is that you can never get the job done. The other day I was in a bookstore flicking though a book called something like '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die' (and, without naming names, you should be aware that the task set by the title is by definition impossible, because at least four hundred of the books suggested would kill you anyway), but reading begets reading - that's sort of the point of it, surely? - and anybody who never deviates from a set list of books is intellectually dead anyway." So I think he's saying we shouldn't feel bad if there's books on this list we don't even WANT to read. I love book lists too - and I have lots of them plugged into spreadsheets where I log which ones I own and have read. But the only list that I am actually trying to read in its entirety right now are the Newbery Medal winners. But I love to get book suggestions off of lists of books, and to log my progress in the list, even if I'll never finish.

Nick Hornby taught me that it´s okay to buy much more books than you can ever read and that it´s not unforgivable give up on a novel But I enjoy list, there´s so much satisfaction when you can check off another title.

I love book lists too, and that quote from Nick Hornby is so funny! Especially the bit where he says that about 400 of the books on the list would kill you anyway!
I don't read books on designated lists just because they're on there, but often the lists make me want to make an effort to read more classics.

I'm not sure i should even post on threads after what happened in the travel one, but heck! I have no shame! Lists are handy for the exact reason Dom pointed out, and i also find it fun to mock certain texts that make it on the list and curse the creator for excluding others, and anything that can involve praising and criticisng faceless names is time well spent in my mind!

I just did a quick google search for this book and found a site where some extremely ambitious person developed a downloadable spreadsheet with all the books listed. You can plug in your age and then go down the list and place an 'r' next to all the books you have read. The program then counts the read books and calculates how many you need to read a year in order to finish the list based on the average life span for a Western female or male. It also calculates the percentage of the list you have completed. I am not positive if the mathematics is correct but it's interesting none the less. The link is johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=42

That sounds so cool! I'll try it out when I get home because the computer I'm on right now doesn't have Microsoft Office haha Have you done it? How many books do you have to read a year?
