;D
On to a more serious topic now: How do you guys feel about donating your organs? I signed my organ donnor card a long time ago and made sure to tell my family about it, so I'm still surprised when I hear people say they don't want to donate their organs. What use is it to them once they're dead?! I don't understand how they would not want to save somebody else's life if they could...

Definitely a more serious topic. ;D I haven't signed anything but I too have told my family that I want to donate my organs, if they could be of use. I know some people are scared that you might be killed (sort of) so your organs could be donated, which (I think) doesn't make much sense. I'd feel better to know that I've helped somebody, although I realize that I would be dead.

I'm not an organ donor myself but I might change. I'm still trying to decide which side I'm truly on. A part of me feels its spiritual to have everything with you after death but then a part of me wants to be part of the science and help with organs.
Sort of a serious note, textbooks are really expensive lately. I don't know about other colleges/universities but mine let's us return them if they are going to be used again next year or aren't customized (our math books are which I find ridiculous a little). We're still paid less than what we paid for though. At least it's some money back but for some books they rip you off a lot. I had to pay $596 so far for this next semester and that's 7 classes and not all the textbooks I need yet.

I'm an organ donor too, at the moment in Australia the government is running an ad campaign promoting people to be organ donors, but most of the people I've spoken to about it already are. I've read some really interesting articles when I was studying law about people who object to autopsies being done on their relatives for the same kinds of reasons that people object to organ donations, which I found really interesting.
My textbooks were super expensive when I was at uni too honeyb05, most of them about $150 each, it doesn't seem right does it?

I'm currently not an organ donor. We all get a register form when we turn 18, so I filled mine out back then. I'm not sure about it though. I just don't like the idea of people taking the organs out of my body, even though I'll be dead. But this might change over the years. I know it sounds selfish.. but it's just the way i feel now. They've been trying to get more organ donors in this country, but their plans just aren't affecting me right now.
I recently had to fill out an order form for textbooks and they were 650 euro's in total. I really hope that I'll be done for the entire year, but I'm afraid that isn't the case.

I'm with Carma on the organ donor side as well. Books really are expensive. I feel like, for some of them, I should start renting or getting somewhere else online if it's less expensive not at school. I went and got my books yesterday and it was 2 large boxes full and they were very heavy. So many books. Most weren't textbooks but actual reading books we go over for a couple of my classes. To go with what I was saying earlier in this thread, my dad's cleaning the office extensively today, so I had to clean out my little shelf as well. I found my postcards from Wuppertal and Trondheim and got excited. I thought I'd lost them so I'm glad that I found them. It's cool to see them again.

As far as organ donation goes, I'm officially an organ donor. When you first get your driver's license (or permit), at least in Ohio, they ask you if you want to be an organ donor and it is printed on your card. So I have been one since I was 16 (about 7 years). I, too, believe my organs are of no use to me when I am dead so, if they can save someone else, I'm willing to give them up. Yes, it's a little sad that one has to die tragically to have their organs be good enough for donating. But that's life. Some have nicer ends than others.
As for textbooks, that is one thing I'm glad about graduating for. On average, my books cost me around $400 a semester, and that's buying everything possible used. It wasn't an odd occurrence when buying a new book would cost me easily $150. I am, thank god, done with university. For a while. I still need my masters within 5 years
But I'm actually taking a class online this fall (to stay on my parents' insurance until I get married in December) and am really excited. I'm a nerd. Lucky for me, the textbook needed is the newest edition of a textbook my older sister gave me. I cross-referenced the tables of contents (found the new one online) and there is virtually no difference, so I am not buying the new edition. I did have to buy a $2.50 book of civil war poetry (I love Dover editions, so cheap!). The shipping cost twice as much as the price of the book

Anyone see this site before - Goodreads.com ? I saw it on a comment to my cousin's blog and found it a little interesting. I'm not sure if I'll sign up for it but I'm thinking about it.

So, I'm currently not an organ donor, because I'm not yet 18, but I have to make this decision soon, because I'm turing 18 next month. Right now I'm leaning towards donating, I just have no use for the, if I'm dead, but I also think that it is kinda scary and honestly it creeps me really out. In Estonia, it is not that common thing, I only know very few people, who actually have a donor card in their wallet. Most people just don't like the idea, and are against it. As far as the textbooks go, we don't have to buy our own textbooks, we can lend them, or when we really want to, buy them. There are only few books, we had to buy last year, and they didn't cost over 15 euros ( I have to get used to talking about euros, because starting January 1st we'll be a part of the Euro-zone as well ) I had never visited that site before, but I just checked it out. It seems interesting, and reminds me a little shelfari.com.

Woah, I was driving home today from work when all of a sudden my car started making a lot of noise so I pulled over very quickly. Called my dad who was still at work (and very nearby) and he looked at it and said I could still drive it home. So I did, it was like I was driving a very loud sportscar. Also lost something on the way home, since the exhaust eventually fell off on one side. Some people honked at me and pointed towards the bottom of my car. Dragged it all the way home. Hope this isn't going to get very expensive!!

I also called my dad and he also said I could drive home with it. It turned out to be quite expensive, because my car needed a new exhaust.

So I bought a small calendar today for 2011 and it has Audrey Hepburn photos in it. I didn't realize it when I picked it up, but when I got it home and opened it up (yeah, it had clear plastic on it, but I still didn't notice it until I took it off) that the picture on the front, a classic promo for Breakfast at Tiffany's, edited out the cigarette! I've seen this picture so many times and I can't figure out why it took me so long to realize the calendar had been edited. And then my thought was: Why?! I mean, it makes her look really silly in the picture, sort of like she's gesturing for money.
If you click the link below, it'll show you the unedited picture. Imagine this picture without the cigarette and holder--do you think it would look silly without it? karenquinn.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/audrey-hepburn-posters.jpg

It would definitely seem very silly. It is really weird that they did it, but I know that there has been quite a lot similar incidents. By the way, they did a similar thing with HP7 trailers. In the first trailer you can see Hermione with bloody hands, but in a later trailer are they clean. You can see it here: www.mugglenet.com/viewer/?image_location=/movie7/hermionebloodcompare.jpg

Just having cigarettes or bloody hands in something younger children can see, doesn't make it wrong to leave them there. It's not endorsing anything, I think.

About organ donation, in here things are going to direction that you are automatically an organ donor unless you have a card that says you are not. I think most of people are just lazy to get a organ donation card or it really doesn't matter to them so when you have to get the card that says 'don't take my liver' those people who really object the matter can get the card and those who need the organs can get them. But something completely different: www.outofprintclothing.com/Cute t-shirts with bookcover prints. And for every sold shirt a book is send to Africa.
