I'm kind of in this situation now that I should know which subjects I'll read in high school. I think I'll choose French for elective language When I was younger I hated to read languages but now I really love them.
My native language is Finnish. Grammar is difficult. I mean it's easy for me becouse I've lived with this language my whole life but compared to English, it's difficult.
Our country has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. This means we all have to also read Swedish. Many teenagers have a little attitude problem, but I like Swedish.
And of course we study English. Couple of years ago I was very bad at it. AT 5th grade I was on a speacial education, and now my classmates are: "Hey, when did you become so good in English?" I'm not so sure, is my English so good, but I feel that I finally learn something.
And then I want to ask you. Which languages you can speak? Is there some languages you would like to speak? Etc.

I speak French and English, and I can carry on a conversation in Spanish but it's far from perfect. Next I'd love to learn Italian and maybe German... I love languages!

I speak mainly English, but I'm meant to speak Mandarin and Cantonese fluently... I can understand it, but I speak like broken Chinese which annoys the crap out of my parents. I would really like to learn Mandarin properly, but also I think that Spanish, French and Italian are cool.

I speak Hebrew and English, Spanish (my dad is Spanish so I kinda learned from him but it's still rusty!), a little bit French (from school) and that's about it. I really want to improve my French, everyone seems to dislike it but I think it's a beautiful language!

I speak Greek and English and I can carry a conversation in Spanish (although with difficulty). I took French in school, but since then I managed to forget everything I knew... I'd like to learn Italian and I'd definitely like to improve my Spanish...

I speak Italian because is my mother tongue (and when I started to teach it I realised how difficult it is!), I can also speak English and Spanish but in Spanish I've not the same fluency that I have in English (I guess it's because I lived in Britain for while so you could say that I'm more at ease when I speak English than when I speak Spanish...)
In high school and college I studied also French, Greek and German, I retained some of the grammar and I can understand them and have (very)small conversations..but I have to say tat now I would like to be able to speak German better.

I speak Norwegian, and since the Norwegian language is divided into two different languagethingys, I can speak and write both of them. Also English of course, and Spanish. I had German for three years in junior high, and I still understand a lot of it I'm just not that fluent when I talk myself. And also I can make myself understood in Portugese and I speak a tinytiny bit of Quechua.

My mother tongue is Italian and I can speak English (not very fluently though), because I've studied it at school. I've started being interested in languages when I was in high school and I had a very good teacher of English, now I'd like to learn Spanish, German (my grandma studied German) and maybe Portoguese (my cousin lives in Lisbon, I've been there but I've learned only how to say "thank you" and how to order a torrada ;D ). That's all...if Classical Latin doesn't count...since it's a dead language and I think I will never have to carry on a conversation in Latin, lol

I always forget that most of you speak a language other than English in your everyday life - you are just all so good at it. Like Kristie, I think I might come off as an arrogant American who expects everyone to know English, but I'm really not. I'm just really bad at learning languages. I studied Spanish in high school and in college (although I stopped when the school deemed me proficient). When I graduate, I'm going to go back and try to relearn Spanish b/c it's the most useful one in the US - esp. since I'll be in Florida. I'd also like to learn French. And Maybe Italian. Ben and I talk about taking French classes eventually. I'm very impressed with all of your language abilities...

I took French in high school, and really enjoyed it. I've gotten very rusty, but when I went to French I was surprised how much of it came back easily, I could read signs and menus, and order pretty well. I'd like to study it more on my own, and become even better than I was before.

Well, my mother tongue is Dutch, obviously I know English.. I had 2 years of German in High school,... I can understand German (because it's a bit like Dutch), but I can't really talk or write it... same with French, I've had 5 years of French in high school and I can understand it a bit, but I can't talk or write it at all, not even when I was still in high school... Plus, I forgot most of what I've learned in high school... even though thats just 3 years ago.. I think, if I went to France.. I might find it easier to understand it all... Oh, and when my mom talks Indonesian, I kind of know what the conversation is about.. but thats all.. I'd like to learn Indonesian though, since i have a lot of family there.. and Italian might be fun too!
