This thread is so we can talk about current events or you can just share some headlines about what's currently in the news in your country.
For instance, in the US the Senate just passed a bill (51-47 votes) that would give the war in the Iraq a $122 million budget and a deadline for pulling our troops out. If the bill passes, Bush has to start moving troops out within 120 days of the day it passes. Then, by March 31st 2008 all our troops have to be out. Bush vows he will veto the bill, but thankfully because of our government system even if he vetos it and enough in the House and Senate vote for it it can still pass. I know this is unlikely, but I hope it passes. www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/29/us.iraq.ap/index.html
So, what's happening around you?

v. interesting, Kristie. The war in Irak doesn't make any sense to me, so I do hope they move the troops out very soon.
Over here, people still talk a lot about the elections that were held on Monday - for the first time in over 100 years Quebec will be lead by a minority government, and there will be 3 major parties in the House instead of 2.

Is that good or bad that there will be three parties involved? Will it make decisions harder? I just cannot wait for a new president. Although there is a huge variety of people running, at least for the democrats. I won't get to vote in the primary elections to choose a candidate for a party because I'm independent and in Ohio independents don't vote on primaries. Some states let independents vote for one or the other party if they like, I think, or maybe they get to vote for both parties. I'm not sure exactly. All I know is that I won't get to vote in primaries.

Personally I think it's a good thing, but other people might disagree. I like the fact that you no longer have to vote for or against a referendum (that's pretty much what it was like before, one party was in favour of the separation of Quebec from the rest of Canada, the other one wasn't), but I think a lot of people are wondering what this new third party will do since a lot of the members don't have much experience... I still think it's a good idea to shake things up, for better or for worst, because when you stop change it doesn't take long before you stop progress. But like I said, it's only my personal opinion!

I agree Jefie, I'm glad it seems that the people want a change. Referendum seems to be put on the back burner for now...but I worry about the lack of experience with the ADQ. However, that doesn't prove their incompetence and if they work with the liberals perhaps it will be a great thing. Only time will tell...

Recently there was this guy in my town that murdered his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend. It was weird because murder doesn't really happen in my city. Not only that, it took the police about a week to track the guy down! People can be so stupid...

Boris Yeltsin, the man credited with dismantling the Soviet Union has passed away. He was the first president of Russia and he adopted a more friendly foreign policy attitude towards the U.S. and the Western world when he went into power in the 90's. He was 76 years old. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6584481.stm

Friendly in that he does what the U.S Government wants you to do. Putin's lucky because if he was the leader of a Middle-Eastern country he would be labeled as a "terrorist country" or a country that is allied with these "terrorist countries"

The pentagon announced yesterday that 35,000 US troops will be preparing to leave for Iraq in October.
I'm so incredibly sick of this. It's out of control. We need a new president, immediately.
