I voted for answers 2,4,5 but at the same time I think it's bad that it was on a religious holiday that it happened, that it will cause more tensions in the middle east and that it was done the way it was, he died in mid prayer.
Even after voting for those answers I'm already reconsidering because he could have spent the rest of his life in jail instead. But at the same time he was responsible for hundreds of atrocities to humans. I'm still not entirely certain what I think because I'm usually quite against the death penalty.

I voted 2 but just like you Dom, I'm not totally sure of my answer. I voted 2 because I've seen so many dictators wait around forever for their trials (Pinochet being the last one) and they end up dying before receiving their sentence, and somehow it feels like justice hasn't been done. At the same time, I also think it's going to cause even more tension in the Middle East.
I've always been against the death penalty, but in Canada our prison system costs a lot of money to keep up and sometimes criminals end up being turned loose because we can't afford to keep them in. Some of them, especially sexual predators, end up committing other crimes. So in the case of repeated offenders for crimes like murder and rape, I sometimes think that the death penalty would be appropriate...

I voted number one but I also agree with 3. I´m absolutely against the death penalty. Of course there´s always people I think might deserve it but this is not something where every once in awhile people can decide to make an acception. Looking at the justice systems in the world and at society I don´t think people should be allowed to decide someone´s death, it´s too permanent, people make mistakes. Lots of them. But I can understand your reasons, I didn´t have to suffer from rapists let loose or dictators so maybe I´m too objective. There is enough money to keep them locked up but it´s spent elsewhere, and if rapists were suddenly after men as much as women and kids I think it would speed things up a bit. Politics are so depressing!

lol, I know! But I agree with you about how people can make mistakes, and that's why I'm still against the death penalty. It's been about 50 years now since the death penalty has been abolished in Canada and people are still debating some cases where the person that was killed might in fact have been innocent. And the worst part is, it doesn't even seem to lower the crime rate.

I voted for 3 and 5 because I think the way they handled the situation was very inappropriate. I feel this way because I believe the United States would have given at least a little respect and dignity in his last moments to the former leader. I think it's unfortunate that this might ignite violence from some people in the Middle East.

I don't support death penalty because I think it's not a way to pay for any mistakes. I definetly agree with you, dorothy, I don´t think people should be allowed to decide someone´s death. Thinking that there are people which can do so makes me feel very bad. In this case, I know he did cruel things and I agree that he must be punished but I think it would be better if he has spent the rest of his life in jail to pay for his ruthless actions.

I picked the "2, 4, & 5" option. I do think that he needed to pay for what he did. I don't usually support the dealth penalty, but in this case I do. I don't support it for a reason that prolly isn't what makes other people not like it. I don't think that killing the person is wrong, but they're not going to be punished in anyway if they're put to death. It's just a way out of it, I think. I didn't know the death tape was on the net but I definitely think that it shouldn't be. I also kinda agree with 3 that it'll create more problems, prolly more problems than it will solve.

There are two death tapes on the net, on that shows him being taunted by gaurds before being hung mid-prayer, another one has surfaced of the shrouded body being uncovered by whoever is filming it. I think it's very inappropriate that they're available for people to see and that they will cause even more anger in the middle east for some parties because of the disrespectful way it was done. On the other hand it hammers home the point that officials and people in power are going to have to remember that when they do this kind of thing wrong, someone is going to be filming it on a mobile phone now that camera phones have come down in price. In the information age people are going to have to be more responsible for fear of whatever it is they're doing being outed on the internet. Hopefully that higher level of responsibility will make them actually act in a more responsibile and less politically damaging manner. If that makes sense lol.

The tapes were horrible to watch, why don´t the people responsible understand that stooping so low shows that they are not much better than the ones they are punishing? Power really corrupts the character.

Yeah, power corrupts. As well as hate. "It is the nature of hate to destroy."

I don't think we have the right to decide when people die. I think that's God's decision and his alone. No matter what kinds of things they do, we have no right to decide.
I was in the doctor's office when the news announced that he was to be hanged. Everyone kind of cheered and said good riddance. It made me sick to my stomach to see people act like that about a fellow human being. You know?
Normally I'm not very opinionated, but on this subject I am.

I think the problem is that most people see things in black and white. There´s the bad guy and the good side but there´s always so much more to it. Like Saddam Hussein, suddenly he´s the bad guy on everyones radar but before the wars no one was interested that he terrorized people. He was even given weapons by industrialized countries.
