I dated a guy who was in the army for two years, and I can't say that it was a great experience. The military becomes such an overpowering presence in your life, it's like it controls everything: when, where, if and how you can see each other, and making plans for the future is next to impossible... I think I actually have more admiration for the wives/husbands of soldiers than I do for the soldiers themselves. Even if it's a tough job, at least soldiers get to do what they love to do, what they've chosen to do. But the wife/husband just sits at home with all the problems and none of the rewards...

Two of my friends from high school got married. He's in the army and he was being stationed in Germany, so they got married and she lives on base with him there. I think it's great that they get to be together. It would be hard on both, I think, just like I think it would be hard for any family with a relative/friend in the armed forces. Nick's cousin is in Iraq at the moment (he's a volunteer firefighter on an AFB) and his girlfriend, while knowing he's got one of the safer jobs and is only going to be there for a year, tops, is missing him.
