The legal age for drinking in most Canadian provinces is 19, but it's 18 in Quebec. I think I started drinking with my friends when I was 14 or 15 (I come from a small town, there wasn't that much else to do on a Friday night) and my parents would buy it for me, that way it was easy to keep track of what I was drinking. It worked out well, I never came home drunk, and I think I'll probably do the same with my kids.

I started drinking at about 17, but I went behind my parents back to do it because there's no way at that stage they would have bought me any or anything like that. As a result I learnt not to mix too many types of drinks in one night and to be careful when not drinking pre-mixed drinks the hard way. They buy for my 17 year old sister now.

my question is, do you need special drivers licenses to drive in foreign countries? i imagine that if you're going to a country that drives on the opposite side of the road you might need one. i know that US and Canada can drive in each other but i heard you have to have a special license to drive in britain. just wondered if that was true and how that works in your countries.

Hmmh, I don´t think I need a special one. I know there´s no problem with Germany and the Netherlands.

I think it depends on the country and where you come from - sometimes you'll need what they call an international driver's license. But I looked it up for Ireland and even if they drive on "wrong" side of the road, you don't need a special license if you come from Canada.

How do you like English speaking movie dubbed into your language? I realize most of you are from Canada or Australia, but for those of you from Europe (not England obviously) how do you like dubbed movies? I can't say I really watch many movies that are foreign and have to be dubbed. Well, there was "To Live" which was in Chinese, "Il Postino" which was in Italian, and then an interview with Leni Riefenstahl that was in German. Those all had subtitles though, not dubbed. But I really didn't have to read most of the interview with Riefenstahl because I understood basically what she said since I was taking German in school at the time. All those I had to watch in an English class. (Go figure) Sorry bout that rambling...

I hate it! It didn't bother me as much when I was a kid but now I only watch movies in their original version or with subtitles. It bugs me when the lips don't match the words and sometimes the voice they give to the actors sound so silly. Especially in Quebec, where they use the same people over and over again to do the voice over, so basically Tom Cruise talks like Bruce Willis, soooo annoying!
It works with cartoons though. I don't watch those shows a lot but I think The Simpsons and South Park are way more funny in French than in English.

I prefer subtitles except when it's an action movie. When it's a subtitled action movie it moves to fast and I'm busy reading the subtitles so I get lost and miss whats going on.

I can definitely see how subtitles with action movie can suck. For some reason I always put the captions on when I watch movies, so I'm pretty used to reading and watching at the same time. Of course one does miss the small detail once in a while, but I just can't helping turning on the captions.

I don't like "subbed" movies. All my friends don't like reading them, so I end up reading them for all my friends. It makes them laugh since I don't swear, and always skip swear words when I read them.

If anyone cares about the stupid thing I kept saying the other day, I have a funny story. To make it short, I was watching something on TV with Nick and it was on the CBC station (that's Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). But I'd forgot it was on that station and there were lots of ads for Boxing Day Sales. I yelled at the TV like it was stupid for broadcasting something Americans don't even celebrate. After about 3 or 4 times of being angered at the ads, I realized I was watching CBC and it all made perfect sense to me. I'm a really sharp one if you couldn't tell.

That is a good one. Its alright though. The CBC needs a good yelling at once in a while.

I pretty much grew up with dubbed movies which I think is true for most people in not English speaking countries since that entertainment industry is the largest. I was okay with it till we moved to Holland and they have subtitles and I learned Dutch and English so now I know most actors´voices and the translator´s voice bothers me. But if I don´t understand the original language I´m okay with dubbed.
