I had a question about a book to buy. I know that we have a Book Recommendations thread and I realized maybe we could have a thread about books we're thinking about buying, but want some other opinions on.
For example, I'm thinking about buying Devil in the White City by Erik Larson because we read a couple excerpts in my history class and it seemed good. So I just wondered what anybody's opinions are on this book--did you like it, think I should buy it, etc? (I like history, so that aspect should be no reason for not buying it.)
Does this seem thread-worthy? Making a new one to ask others if a book is good enough to be bought (or at least opinions, not necessarily yes or no for buying)?

It's a great thread Kristie! I've been actually wondering why we don't have one like this. And sorry I haven't read this book.

I haven't read it either. But my mom has read it and really loved it. She also recommended it to many members of my family, and they loved it too. My boss also read it, and I actually asked her if I should buy it...it was at Barnes and Noble on a "buy 2 get the 3rd free" table and I was trying to decide which ones to buy. She said she really enjoyed it, but not to buy it...to check it out from the library. People may just tell me that though because I buy way too many books! Maybe I need a control group. I guess I'd recommend getting it out from the library if it's easy to get. Then you can always buy it later if you love it and want to own it. Also, I do like the topic of this thread!

I'm wanting to buy it for future purposes. Since I'm going to teach history, and it's historical fiction, I might want it for something. I plan to let my students do some extra credit stuff with reading books and whatnot, so that's why I was thinking of purchasing it...classroom use lol

Do you guys think Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer is worth it? I've been meaning to buy it for ages but something always postponed me buying it... I recently heard that it's basically just Edward's point of view from the Twilight book. I don't know if it's worth buying a book that has the same story line only from the perspective of a vampire...What do you guys think

I loved Eclipse. I'm addicted to her books, I can't wait to get the Host which is a new book of hers coming out soon.
It's the continuation of the series.

Hi Kristie;
I've actually purchased and read - sometime ago - Devil in the White City. As such, I can recommend it to you, especially since you love history - personally I love historical fiction (and fiction in general, of course). The author included a lot of historical detail in the descriptions within the novel. The novel itself is well written, but in saying that, part of it's appeal is that it is gruesome, disturbing, psychologically thrilling with a dark overlaying tone - it's not a pleasant read, but it is an interesting read. In particular, I found the psychological analysis of the murderer to be interesting. I hope this post helps you in your decision of whether, or not to purchase this novel.

Cool thread! I don´t know the book you mentioned, Kristie. But you could check it out of the library and if you really like then buy it.

I plan to teach history too, Kristie and for that reason I seem to buy a lot of books that past teachers have discussed in my classes. It's a good way of getting students to read more, especially if its for a grade. I always thought we didnt' read enough in other classes besided English, so I'm doing the same thing as you and starting to buy books I might want to use some day in my future classes.
What's your concentration in?

Is she the daughter of Roald Dahl? Sorry if I am just grabbing at straws but it would be cool if she wrote a book!

Roald Dahl's daughter, Ophelia, is in a book. She is in Mountains beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder - she volunteered in Haiti at the same time and they almost got married.
