Really? I liked Der Hauptmann von Köpenick even though we discussed it in school, it was so authentic. But I can see your point since I prefer American literature myself.

Me too. I always prefer reading american literature. But there are some German authors I really admire, like Kafka or Fontane.

This list is better than my Italian literature list!
I've always thought I've read a few of German literature but I have to change my opinion. At school I read Goehte (I hated Werther!), Mann, Nietzsche, Kafka, Kant, von Kleist, Brecht. Brecht is my favourite, I loved his "Galileo"! I also read a book by Dürrenmatt I don't remember the original title but the italian title is "la morte della Pizia"; I relly enjoyed this book! Is Arthur Schnitzler a German author? I'm not sure!

I studied Bertolt Brecht for 6 months at school, I find him very interesting and all the ideas and things he tries to do with his plays. Like how he believes that theatre should be didatic and not entertaining, so he constantly writes in things or uses techniques to shatter the illusion of the play and get people thinking about the ideas behind it.
Also Sinatra's Mack the Knife is from Brecht's Threepenny Opera.

Galileo is a great book.
Here are some of my favourite German Children's books:
Der Wunschpunsch by Michael Ende Momo by Michael Ende Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner The flying classroom by Erich Kästner Das Sams by Paul Maar The Robber Hotzenplotz by Otfried Preußler The little Ghost by Otfried Preußler.
Unfortunately I couldn't always find a translation.

But my personal favorite ist Ronja the robber´s daughter and The children from Bullerbü (yeah, I know, finding translations is tough).

I heard somewhere on the internet that it was popular a few years ago. If I remember correctly, it's a compilation of a bunch of suicide notes put into a book. Or something sordid like that.

But Astrid Lindgren is a swedish author, Dorothy . I love all of her books. I travelled through Scandinavia last summer with some friends and we saw Michel's farm (who they call Emil in Sweden and everywhere else), it was so fantastic to see the "Holzschuppen" and Alfred's house...
