We've recently been talking about classic books that people haven't read yet, that you'd expect to read in school.
I haven't read that much Shakespere, I'd like to read more. I've read "Emma" and "Pride and Prejudice" I'd like to read the others. Catcher and the Rye...see why everyone likes it.

There are so many I want to read, but the two I can think of at the moment that best fit your description of books I should have read in high school are 1984 and A Separate Peace.

I just bought the entire works of Jane Austen, which I intend on reading at some point in the future. I just started Emma the other night.

I've never read 1984 either...I read "Animal Farm." 1984 is really good. There is a bit more focus on the story, the plot and the ideas over like great writing or something? Like it's a great book but I didn't really find great lines or techniques like I find in most classics. Still fantastic though.

emma is humourous, but one of austen's less popular books. i loved it though, as i did all her books. if you've seen the movie clueless, this is a "hip" version of the emma story (even if it is degrading, it has the same story line).

I have the complete works of Austen too...and again will get to eventually. Anna Karenina is really good. My dog chewed the corner of the book when he was a puppy.

Grapes of Wrath is so long...but it's not bad. Even if I did have to read it for school and someone got red kool-aid on part of it at lunch.

Middle march is good...but I loved Adam Bede! Grapes of Wrath is also great. I also want to read Hemingways short stories, I haven't read that much.

Definitely catch-22. My library doesn´t have it but it has the second book. How dumb is that? I guess I´ll start on the classics again next year. I read almost exclusively classics last year so I made this year about the contemporary lit.

I just cannot get into Middlemarch. I've tried a few times, but it just doesn't work for me. I'm thinking about getting into the "newer classics", the ones where the authors aren't hundreds of years old.

Middlemarch takes a long time to get into. I had to read it for a lit class and when I started I thought I'd never be able to get through it. I ended up getting into it after a while though
