I hate even underlines. I don't write margins. When I read book for school I usually write notes, but never margins. I really hate when I read library book and it's full underlines etc. When I used to read teenager books they had some stupid writing like "hey, turn page 204" and there was something very clever.

im looking like crazy for that book case. i thought barnes and nobles would have a few, but i guess i will have to order one online.
i finally set up my bookshelves, i have about half of my books at my apt now.. when i was done, i stood back to look at the books when a crazy thought entered my mind - what if someone touches my books or ask to borrow them?!?! they are out in the open, in the living room anyone who visits could just pull one off the shelf and i would go crazy! what do i say to someone who wants to borrow a book? im a nice person, but not with my books.

Lol! That just shows how much you love your books. I love books too but I just have to share the ones I love with the people I love. My mum and I share books without even asking. My best friend and I also borrow each other books to keep costs down. Often we will go book shopping together so that we get books that we both like! On the topic of margin writing I have to admit that I'm guilty. I know it's really bad etiquette but When I was in high school I used to write notes in my book (in pencil though!). I kind of liked the idea of the person who reads it next seeing my opinion or see the passages that I thought were signifigant. I also like to read other peoples comments even if they are really stupid. Sometimes its good for a laugh.

The only books i have ever written in the margins for were my HP's.... primarily coz i wanted to mark them with something that wasn't in any of my other books, and because once i had started, i just couldn't stop! Plus, it's hilrarious to look back now and see where i was making discoveries or theories as i read... HBP is especially ladden with conspiracies! I never really wrote anything in margins for books in high school, coz i felt naughty doing so, even in pencil; instead i used little post-it notes that stuck out so i could find the page and my accompanying idea. My maths text books from primary school however are covered in doodles and whatnot - i was never a maths-minded student! One thing i always used to hate at school was when Bibles were doodled in - not coz i was offended or anything, but simply because it was almost always someone trying to be rude and clever and really they just wasted their time and got on my nerves!

One thing i always used to hate at school was when Bibles were doodled in were they dirty doodles? I want to know what kind of notes someone could take in a bible... it's not like it makes illusions to Henry James or something...

One of my friends is a devout Christian and I know that he's underlined a lot of passages he likes in the Bible and written stuff in the margins when the pastor would explain some of the verses...

Oh no, they were dirty things absolutely. (sketching 'parts' over the illustrations etc or just writing crude comments) Never anything at all insightful or intelligent. Just stupid boys wasting their time trying to provoke response and gain attention. And of coure they figured the Bible was as good a place to do this coz it would also get them into trouble with the teachers. Ugh. No wonder i loathed all the guys at my school!
