One of our current displays at the library is Travel with Fiction. And it got me thinking...
Many of us will travel to different parts of the world through books more than actual travel in our own lives. Even my bookcase at home is set up, in one section, of alphabetizing the countries the books are set in.
So, what countries have you traveled to through books? Which were your favourites?
I've been to China a few times, and I always liked it. I've also been to England/Britain many times through Austen and others and enjoyed it immensely, especially during the Regency.
What about you?

Right now I'm in Cuba, but I'm not enjoying this particular stay due to all the guerilla warfare going on. I've been many places, only in my last book (Tramp for the Lord) I visited Poland, Netherlands, Australia, Rwanda, USA, Germany, New Zealand, Argentina, Russia, Cuba (liked it better that time), Denmark and several other places. I love books that take you travelling and kind of just describes the place so much that if you ever go there you kind of recognise it!

Nice thread, Kristie! My first travel was in USA with Alcott (I can't remember exactly where Little Women is set...in Boston, if I'm not wrong). I've been to Britain with Austen several times, and I enjoyed it so much. I've been to Cuba with Bianca Pitzorno ("Le bambine dell'Avana non hanno paura di niente") and it was wonderful, the first part of that book includes three biographies set in three different period, it was a great "travel" throughout history and it was very interesting. I also have been to Russia (Dostoevskij, Tolstoj and Cechov) and I pretty liked it. I visited also Denmark, Spain, German, Ancient Greece and Rome, and brief visits to China and India. I've been to France only a few times (twice, I think) and the best was with Hemingway ("A moveable feast").

I can't even remember them all! But mainly France, England, Japan, China, America, Canada, Cuba and India. I like books set in foreign countries, there are so many of them that I want to read.

I love traveling with Bill Bryson through his memoirs. Most of my traveling is in the USA and UK, but I do a lot of time traveling. I've been to India in Life of Pi and The Namesake. I've been to England with Jane Austen, Bridget Jones, Marian Keyes, The Brontes, and Katie Fforde, among many others. Long before I moved to New York I roamed Brooklyn with Betty Smith in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I became a southern belle with the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Many more, but those come immediately to mind. Very cool thread! It reminds me of Rory's High School graduation speech.

Right now I am roaming through the corridors of an exquisite opera in the 1920s in New York. But I've gone through the jungles of the Congos to find The Heart of Darkness. I've seen the bombing of Dresden and come face to face with my first Tralfamadorian. I've sat staring longingly with Jane Eyre and gone to many a fancy ball with Lizzie, Jane and Lydia. I've gone to the streets of Italy looking for A Room with a View, and I've stepped into the dark and desolate moors within the English countryside to catch a glimpse of Wuthering Heights. I've pined for love and struggled through the Civil War.

I´ve been to England and the States as well as the Apalachian trail with Bill Bryson. Mostly to Japan but once in Egypt thanks to Banana Yoshimoto and India and France and through South America with Che Guevara. I can never remember these things for threats.

I haven't honestly been many places as i haven't been outside of Australia, but that works fine with a good deal of Aussie fiction, hehe! My main life's aim as far as travel is to go to PEI/ Prince Edward Island and do an 'Anne tour' - that will be beyond divine!!!!
