I started to write an answer in the "Which book did you recently finish?" thread but, after seeing the length of my post, I thought it was a good idea to make a new thread.
I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed reading Antoinette de Mirecourt Did you see the similarities with Pride & Prejudice?
I did, starting from the talk between Mrs. and Mr. D'Aulnay in chapter 1, which reminded me of Pride and Prejudice opening. Since then, I couldn't help but picturing Mr. D'aulnay as Mr. Bennett.
I also found weird that Mr. D'Aulnay doesn't appear much in the novel, that he's mostly mentioned, especially if you consider that a great part of the story takes place in his house. I guess he owns a very good library.
I really liked Louis as a character, more than Colonel Evelyn actually, maybe because I had the impression he's more instrumental for the story. I know it sounds bad, but I was relieved when Mrs. D'Aulnay got the letter from Louis, I think it was in chapter 31.
When I finished reading I realized how much the novel actually focuses on Antoinette's secret sorrowing, I think it's not easy to deal with such a subject without being a bit boring and Antoinette De Mirecourt wasn't, I enjoyed it.
I could pretty easily sympathize with Antoinette and I found Mrs. D'Aulnay annoying, as much as some of Jane Austen characters. Lydia Bennett might have turned out being like Mrs. D'Aulnay as a married woman, except with husbands of very different dispositions.
The chapter (and all the mentions) about Canadian history and society were really interesting, because I didn't know very much about the subject.
I recently finished Antoinette de Mirecourt by Rosanna Leprohon, I really liked it (Thanks, Isa! )
