I was just wondering, when the NA discussion starts and who the discussion leader this time is?

Would anyone like to volunteer to lead the discussion on this one? (I would but I have too many assignments due next week)

I've finished with it. I can probably come up with some questions to discuss, but I don't have time to completely lead the discussion. Anyone else want to help me?

I can't do anything for this now, but later on in the discussion I am sure I will be able to come up with some questions. When do you guys feel comfortable with kicking off?

I'll be pretty busy tomorrow. Maybe we could start the discussion on Thursday? That gives some people time to finish if they haven't already.

Perhaps I can start with the first question:
We are told in the opening paragraph that Catherine Morland was decidedly not born to be an heroine. How does Catherine compare to Jane Austen's other heroines? Why do you think Jane Austen created such an heroine for this particular novel?

I think that Catherine is different by the simple fact that she is younger than the others. I believe she is younger, but if she's not physically younger, she is very naive and mentally younger than the other heriones in Austen's novels. She thinks that everything is going to be as adventurous as her novels. Now, Elizabeth Bennet and Marianne Dashwood liked to read, Marianne even more romanticized books too, but they weren't as gullible as Catherine. It was so easy to persuade Catherine, moreso even than Fanny Price.

Elizabeth Bennett and Marianne Dashwood seemed to like to read more "grown up" books - Shakespeare, novels. I got the impression that Catherine read books that were more "YA" category, or more gothic.

I think jane austen started with that because the books she was parodeing from (is that a word? ) are all books with more or less the same heroine... I think, i've never read those books.... I think Catherine isn't really a regular heroine because she's also easily persuaded, from time to time... and like kristie said she's younger.... I really liked her as a character...
