Ok, here is the first question, for those that are already ready to discuss The other questions and infromation will come later! - Do you think Emma would be so ready to become friends with Harriet if she wasn't of a lower social condition and presented "such a delightful inferiority"?

In my opinion, she wouldn't be. Because, I think, she needed someone who will loop up to her and someone whom she can influence and she needed someone facility.. and I don't think that anyone of the same social condition as her, could meet her requirements.

other questions: 2. Austen wrote about her novel Emma: "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." (Memoir of Jane Austen, by James Edward Austen-Leigh). What do you like or dislike about Emma? 3. What do you think of the way Austen introduced the characters to the reader, in the first chapters? What's your first impression of Highbury?

other questions: 2. Austen wrote about her novel Emma: "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." (Memoir of Jane Austen, by James Edward Austen-Leigh). What do you like or dislike about Emma? I'll have a go at some of the other questions later, I want to answer this one first. While Emma is obviously kind hearted and has good intentions, I find her frustrating! The scenes in this first section where she influences Harriet's rejection of Mr Martin drove me crazy. While I wouldn't say I hate Emma, as I can see she has good qualities too, I think if I met her in real life I wouldn't be able to stand her. For me someone who thinks they know what's best for others better than those people know themselves are absolutely infuriating! She is a nice person at heart but at the same time is such a condescending, conceited and interfering snob! '

I find Emma an interesting person, BUT I couldn't stand her just like Dominique. She thinks she knows everything best.. and even though she has good intentions, she should realize what she can cause. And she's too self-confident and I think that a little egoist too. She's so non-Austen heroine, I guess. But she's quick-witted.

I think Emma is a nosey person and it wouldn't matter what class a person was in. Emma is Emma and she cant help her self.

In answer to question number 2, it's a little early to tell how i really feel about Emma. She seems like a know it all but at the same time she is very young and trying to find her way. Not at all unlike many people of that age today. It should be interesting to see how many lives she messes up before the end of the book and how she copes with that.
