What's the most controversial book you've ever read. For me, I think its Lolita.

I'm not sure actually. Lolita would be pretty high up there. I really didn't enjoy that book though. It was a slog to get through.

I like the way Nabokov writes, so I enjoyed reading Lolita. The most controversial books I've read.... I don't know, probably "Whore" by Nelly Arcan. "Incarnations" by Emmanuel Aquin was also interesting since it dealt with the topic of religion, "A Sunday at the pool in Kigali" by Gil Courtemanche was pretty harsh, also "How to make love to a negro" by Dany Laferriere... Wow, I've just realized all the controversial books I've read were written by Quebec writers!!

Oh,I ´ve only seen the film, didnt really enjoy, but if you think the book is better I´ll read it. I think The Lord of the Flies was controversial,at least when it was published... I dont know if The Trainspotting by I.Welsh is controversial too or its just disgusting in some parts Well,I lent it my friend coze she heard about that and wanted to read it and the next day she brought it back and said she simply cant read stuff like this(I think it was a bit excessive reaction, because she didnt even get to the "toilet scene" )

I can't really think of anything controversial. I know that throughout the US, Catcher in the Rye likes to be censored in schools. I did find a list online of the Top 10 Most Harmful Books to the 19th and 20th Centuries at one point. Here it is: 1) The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx & Freidrich Engels 2) Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler 3) Quotations from Chairman Mao by Mao Zedong 4) The Kinsey Report by Alfred Kinsey 5) Democracy & Education by John Dewey 6) Das Kapital by Karl Marx 7) The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan 8) The Course of Positive Philosophy by Auguste Comte 9) Beyond Good and Evil by Freidrich Nietzsche 10) General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money by John Maynard Keynes www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=7591

A lot of books were considered controversial when they first came out. Just think about Mary Wollstonecraft's The Rights of Woman, or the DaVinci Code and Harry Potter for that matter! But no amount of controversy can justify censorship in my mind. Just let people read and think for themselves.

Catcher in the Rye is still considered pretty bad. I don't really remember why, I think it might have been the language.

I wrote a persuasive essay last semester for my english class about not permitting censorship in high schools. I couldn't go as broad as the whole country/world, so I picked high schools because that's when you have required reading and more chance to run into something questionable. Aside from that list I already copied, the American Library Assoc. (ALA) has a list of the 100 Most Challenged Books from 1990-2000 ( www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bbwlinks/100mostfrequently.htm ) As for that list, I've read, or even had to read for school/been read when I was young: 6, 7, 9, 10, 13 ,14, 21, 22, 23, 51, and 62. I think all but Of Mice and Men and Catcher in the Rye I read all of the rest in elementary school! Duh, what's wrong with people anyways?

I did an essay for my "Libraries and society" class about censorship in public libraries. People have problems with the strangest things. Apparently, the dictionary is pretty problematic. Some people have wanted it banned because there are swear words in it.

Lol. I was reading the list of most frequently challenged books 1990-2000.
And I can't believe Goosebumps was on there. haha.
And are you There God? It's me, Margaret. Oh, because, God forbid, girls actually know what a "period" is.
And some people wanted the dictionary to be banned? Just don't look up the swear words if you don't like it.
People..*grumble* *grumble*

Harry Potter and the DaVinci Code were contoversial??The DaVinci Code for really religious people I get but HP is weird. I don´t think Germany is into censorship as much as the US but perhaps I just don´t notice because I live here.
Mein Kampf is banned I think but I don´t think we´re missing out on a great piece of literature. Still, banning it makes it much more important than it should be.
