So he caved? I´m glad he cannot be elected again. But the Iraq is a mess now as is Afghanistan. Seems like no one really knows what to do about it.
One headline over here: No mercy petition for RAF terrorist Klar.

No sorry, that sounded confusing when I said it. They are getting ready to be deployed TO Iraq, not getting ready to leave Iraq. We're sending even more.
It's insane. And I'm really glad that we've got a democratic congress, but not much is getting done about the war because Bush will veto anything he doesn't like.

I read an alarming article today about the Russian democracy being history and how Putin is creating a small, authoritarian elite, and putting a lot of pressure on countries such as Estonia, Georgia and Ukraine for their governments to resign. That's no good...

That's insane! Are there any soldiers left in America at all? Seems to me like they'll end up compromising the country's security by sending them all off to Irak, I mean, what if something were to happen in the States? And didn't I hear somewhere that they had some problems recruiting national guards to help after the Kansas tornado because most of them had been sent overseas?

I can't believe that 35,000 more soldiers are being deployed. I don't want to say we should bring everyone home because I think we made a mess of things (and by we, I mean Bush) and need to do more to clean it up. But sending so many more...I just don't get this war. 35,000 is about the population of my city, when the university is in session in fall & spring, and I can't believe that many are leaving.
Nick's cousin is getting back from Iraq next Friday (the 18th). He left in October in a firefighting unit, so he volunteered, but he saw much of what the real soldiers saw. My cousin is still in his training for special forces so I don't know if he'll be deployed when the time comes, but he chose the army as his career and I think he'd be willing. I'd just worry about him.
I know this is sort of off-topic, but what do you guys think about the Prince Harry ordeal? Should he be able to fight, or should he be protected in a cushy desk job? I can see good reasons for both...

That's a good question Kristie! I was really surprised they were willing to let him go, considering he can't even fly with his brother in case something happens and they both die in a plane crash or something... on the other hand, if you go back in history, many members of the royal family have fought in wars, and since he's third in line to the throne, I guess it's OK for him to go and it shows that he supports his government's decisions?

I read on the blog Boing Boing that some people did some undercover investigating of Military booths at high schools, colleges, and job fairs. (This was several months ago.) They told potential recruits that they "would definitely not be sent to Iraq" and that "The war was almost over."
total and complete lies that probably many people believed coming from "someone on the inside."
sick.

About the monarchs/rulers being in wars, there were many times that the head of state led the armies into battle. I can see why Harry would want to be treated just as any other soldier, because he joined to fight. But I can see the potential threat because he would most likely not be killed, but rather taken hostage and held for a very pricey ransom from the royal family. It might seem like the soldiers he would be fighting with would feel more a duty to protect him in the face of danger rather than to fulfill their missions, but if I were Harry I think I'd be mad they wouldn't let me do that.
Zelda, I agree with what you said: "sick" Why would you say that? I hadn't heard that til you mentioned it and I can't believe that happens...

We have those booths set up in our schools and they make it seem like going to war is not a likely chance. It's pretty sad

To be perfectly honest, I never paid attention to the recruiting tables at my school. And they were there all the time, for one branch or another.

I´ve heard about that. Whose his successor? I´m also not happy about France voting for Sarkozy.
They are sending even more troops to Iraq?? It´s absurd that Bush can veto everything, not democratic at all. And I doubt it´s going to help the situation.
Very big news here is the G-8 meeting (I don´t know the English term)in June. They really build a super expensive fence to protect the leaders from the people. I hope the situation won´t escalate, last time that happened someone was shot.

Yeah, I saw that on the news yesterday. AFter 10 years, starting off his term with the Princess Di disaster, Blair is resigning. I can't recall the name of the person who is succeeding him, but he did announce it.
Dorothy, even if Bush vetoes everything, the bill goes back to the House and Senate and if it passes by a 2/3 vote in both it can override his veto. But I doubt that will happen, at least in this case. It is the democratic process, but it's very hard to do. Just thought I'd give a little US Government lesson there

Oh good, cause I thought it a bit weird that there´d be a government that gives so much power to one person. I studied the American government system but that was years ago and sadly I´m a very forgetful person

Haha, easy mistake to make. Or just to forget. I was never too fond of learning the government and its processes...
