Ok so as everyone knows I'm striving to be a journalist when I finish uni, and I have a completely irregular job at a newspaper. Unfortunately it's so irregular I also work in hospitality because I have yet to find a stable retail job. I just found out today that I just missed out on my dream retail job, pays nearly twice as much as my current job and I tried so hard to get it! I basically hate my current job at the steakhouse and I loathe the thought of going back there when my annual leave I took to get my wisdom teeth out is up. It's really hard to get a good casual studentish job in my town because there's so much competition.
So I was thinking, a lot of other people have jobs for while they're studying, if so what do you do? and do you absolutely positively hate it as much as I do? I can't wait to have a real job!
(winge fest over lol)
Oh and if you're out in the real world now, what crappy job did you have as a student?

I actually landed pretty good jobs as a student - the worst job I've ever had was working at MacDonald's but that only lasted 3 weeks. I came home one day after a shift and simply never went back, I still have my uniform!
While at uni, I worked for the faculty - as a B.A. student it ranged from welcoming new students and helping them register to folding and mailing report cards. As an M.A. student, I taught poetry to B.A. students and marked papers for one of my professors. Maybe that's something you could look into, it generally pays fairly well.
Also during summer I would always look at all the government programs for students. That's how I landed a job in Alberta for the entire summer, that was fun! It's also how I got started at my current job - they took me in as a student, liked how I worked and decided to keep me.

I worked at a bakery which I hated because their cash box was old and mostly made mistakes or forgot the first price so I quit after a couple of weeks. It would have been much easier without the stupid thing. Every other month I work at some kind of engineering company where I have to put different needles into wire baskets and sew them closed, then drive two hours to another company where they burn or fire or cauterize (I have no idea) them and after a week drive there again to pick them up and and open the seams and put them into boxes. The needles are really sharp but I get 8 euros per hour and gas. And sometimes I help doing inventory at shops. It´s difficult to find good jobs because I´m in Düsseldorf for the week and home on the weekend.

I had pretty great jobs as a student. I worked my freshman through senior year at the daily paper - The State News. I was a Senior Account Executive, except for my junior year when I held the one year position of Advertising Manager. My senior year I also worked as a graphic designer at our university's performing arts center.
However, the summer after my freshman year I also worked at the freshman orientation program, mostly to help students register for classes. It was not fun at all. The students had opinions and they knew nothing about scheduling classes, and I had to be there SO early in the morning.
But for the other jobs, I made myself find jobs that related to my future career, and really enjoyed them because of that. But I think that it's possible to find many jobs that pay the bills and also don't drive you crazy. Have you thought about looking for jobs at the library, or a book store? I worked at a library during high school and it was heaven. I got to read and be around books all day. Or even a job as a receptionist at a business might be lovely. Usually you can read or do homework when it's not busy, and that's a wonderful bonus.

I have been looking for that kind of thing, but it's so hard to get here because so many young people are unemployed. the university library positions are open for a one month window once a year and all the office administration positions want someone with experience but no one will give me experience. I'm at the point where I don't care what I work as anymore, as long as it's not in hospitality, which is basically slave labour. Arrrrgh so frustrating! So many of your jobs/old jobs sound great guys Oh well I'm gonna do some more resumes tomorrow I think.

I work at the law library at my school and I love it. It's quiet and not too stressful and when it gets slow I can study or mess around on the internet (like right now). I worked at an ice cream parlor all the way through high school and college and I loved that job, too. I guess I've always had good jobs as a student - although I did have a job where I had to call alumni and ask for donations and I absolutely hated that. So I recommend libraries and ice cream parlors

Well, as loser-ish as this may seem, I didn't have a job at all in high school and started working about the weekend before I graduated (this was the end of last May). I worked in the summer at the public library and in one of the city parks in the concession stand for the public pool. Both were pretty good, but I barely worked at the park because it was a temporary job and they worked around my stable part-time job (the library). At the library I watch the computer lab users for the most part and after that I just do the basic bitchwork around the reference department. It's not bad, but sooo redundant. Although, while I'm in the lab I can do my homework and stuff and update on here That's why I have so many posts. I get paid minimum wage, but I only have to pay for half of my schooling and my parents pay for the other half. My university has many jobs for students, but it's easier to work at the library because it's closer to my house since I commute.

At school I worked weekend babysitting next door's kids who were a handful.
At Uni I had two jobs - I was a College Librarian so did shelving, loans, cataloguing ang covering books in vistafoil. - Also, I worked as Gallery Assistant at the College Art Gallery, pouring wine, greeting visitors, dealing with sales enquiries etc
In Uni holidays - I worked as a Buying Assistant in my sister's workplace, helping to produce Barbie/Disney branded bags and stationery (good money, fun job lots of perks) - Got two media placements at a radio station making bulletins and features and at a magazine proofing and writing features
Since then... - I organise Fair Trade events for free - I work as a Funding and Comms officer for a charity doing monitoring, admin, claims and PR
Ultimately I want to work in PR for a charity or an ethical business

I'm still a student. But i work at the library near my town. It's a pretty decent job and pays really well. You'd think I'd be in heaven surrounded by all the books but I'M NOT. Don't get me wrong it's not labor extensive or anything it's just ssoooooooooooo BORING. In the morning we have old ladies come into the library and do really weird things. One patron came in looking for books on psychics convinced she really was one. I think she borrowed all the books devoted on the subject. What was worse was that she brought along her daughter-in-law and they were clearly having a little spat, so all you heard was the old lady's nagging and the woman's sighs. If it's not the old folks we have extremely young kids who run around everywhere, with mothers who have too many kids they are unable to handle. They basically consider the library a day-care. So then all I hear are screams. It is so annoying. Don't get me wrong i love allowing semi-little kids pick out books or help find a book they really want to read. That's all fun. but sometimes on our slow days(and we have a lot of em, it kind of sucks!)

Mostly though, at my library, it's annoying junior high kids that are always on the computers. There aren't many little kids except for this one family of 5 kids and their mother, but they're very well behaved for being all under the age of 10, maybe even younger. I hate it when really old people come into the computer lab and don't know anything about computers. I'm not there to teach them how to use them, they can sign up for classes for that, but I'm there for a quick question to help with. Not something that will take 10 mins to show and re-explain a million times.

I can't really wait to get a real job! But I'm still a student now. During summer I work in a factory, it's a 2 months job but I earn pretty much because I have turns of 8 hours (morning-afternoon-night), work on Sunday and other festive days. This is a regular job, some people do that everyday for an entire life...but it isn't exactly my dream job! Also I give lessons of Maths and Physics to a 16 years girl about twice a month, and I work as baby-sitter once a week (if the children aren't sick). I don't have great jobs, but I think that working in a factory isn't bad, I met a lot of nice people and most of them are students at uni.

I work at a local pizza shop part time while I attend school. I started there in November of last year so I've worked there a little over a year. I'm sort of apathetic towards how I feel about my job. I like parts of it and don't like other parts. Working at a fast-food type place is repetitive and easy except for the physical labor part of it. Soon, whenever I'll have trained as a shift manager I'll like my job a little bit more. They also are totally flexible with working around my class schedule and I like all the people I work with so it's not a bad job overall.
