I think it's still popular because of the controversy. You still find a lot of parents nowadays trying to get it banned. And nothing makes a book more popular than it getting into trouble.

Of course being able to relate to a character and his actions is very important. But for me there are a lot more aspects of Holden Caulfield that appeal. For instance, the fine descriptions and comments you get on everything he sees and does. Like his reaction and description of his roommate's dirty habbit of cutting his toenails: so vividly real.
And also I didn't just relate to Holden, but I felt like I knew him and what he's about. At the last page, you think you know him so well. I felt sorry to say goodbye to him.
I read Bell Jar too. I really liked and understoord the main character Esther, but in a totally different way than I ever felt about Holden. I don't think the books are that comparable.

i Wrote an essay for my english class on this topic which was why I was interested in what you guys all thought! I ended up saying that it has sttod the test of time because of, the ability to relate to Holden, The underlying universal themes ( Childhood Innocence, social critism) and J.D. Salingers writing style!

I also did not like this book at all. I agree with everything you said poisonpen.... I found Holden incredibly annoying and I felt it was over-hyped (I did read it later than a lot of people, when I was 21, most read it in high school). I did enjoy the way JD wrote, I was torn between loving the way he wrote and hating the story and Holden. So I'd really like to read other of JD's work, especially Franny and Zoey.
And I love The Bell Jar....

I read it when I was 20 too, and I liked it a lot. I think maybe all the fuss about it is because when it first was published it was something new, and I also found it really interesting seeing things through Holden's eyes, because I think it was a very true description of kids in the same place as him. I get why Rory compared Jess to him...
