the school that i went in and out off ( I travelled and danced a lot!) We had school right from grade 1 -12 and then you could stay an extra year if you wanted to take extra courses. also instead of going to kindergarten you usually just took grade 1 when you were 4 and then if you were smart enough you moved on if not you stayed in gr1 till you were 6!
i live in ONtario now and we definitely go and get a real tree from a farm adn decorate it for christmas

We have kindergarten from age 3 till 6years, then we go on to elementary school(Grundschule) which is grade 1-4. Then we go to different schools according to skills. I went to the "Gymnasium" which is grade 5-13 and it enables you to go to college. The others are grades 5-10 mostly and then you can get an education as a blacksmith and other mostly practical jobs.
Yes we do have real christmas trees and we decorate them. It gets cold here though there´s not always snow but it´s wet and windy.

I remember learning about the German school system a couple years ago when I was taking German in high school. For some reason it confused me then, but it makes total sense now.

That's funny what you call kindergarten we call preschool, and then we call your year 1 kindergarten, your year 2 year one and so on, so we end up having the same number of years but the final one is called year 12.

Hmmm, I think we call it kindergarten and preschool both. Because preschool grades are called K2, K3, and K4. K being short for kindergarten, though when most people say kindergarten here they mean K5, K5 is the first mandatory school year.

we call school for about 3-4 year olds preschool. typically you start kindergarten when you're 5. then after kindergarten are grades 1-12. in my city we had elementary grades K-6, junior high grades 7-8, and high school was 9-12. but many schools in the US have middle schools which are 6-8 or 7-9

It sort of came up in another thread and now I'm curious: how do you guys celebrate Christmas?

well, i think that just depends on your family/religion (or lack thereof) rather than country. for most people in the us i think it's the same: we get christmas off work and i'm pretty sure that most people spend christmas with their families. of course there are those families that go to foreign countries or on cruises for christmas (i will NEVER do that), but i usually spend the day with my family and get fat on food. we always have my small family christmas and then my large family from my mom's side. usually my dad's side (since it's his one brother and his family) we celebrate christmas in may. haha i spend some christmas at nick's and last year i was the one with the most presents to an individual on his dad's side. i was embarassed because i had the most presents and i'm not technically even in the family! enough of my life story...

The French Canadian tradition is to go to midnight mass, then it's usually a huge family gathering (leave it up to Catholics to have huge family gatherings - my mother has 9 brothers and sisters!). We usually start eating at around 1 am, open up gifts around 3 am and party on until about 6 am. The latest we've made it was 9 am, and then we had breakfast with the leftovers ;D

yeah, I lived in Ontario for a while and came to the conclusion that there was a big difference between Catholics and French Canadian catholics!

Well I´m a Catholic on paper and so are my mother and my brother. My father is technically a Muslim and he doesn´t eat pork but he drinks alcohol.I guess my family is the nightmare of every religious person. Traditionally we celebrate Christmas on the 24st december and go to mass around 6 but since my family is always running late it´s so full when we arrive that we head back home to eat dinner My brother, my father and I play bord games while my mum plays "Christkind" and wraps the presents. Then we eat dinner and then open the gifts and then just hang out. 25 and 26 december are for family gatherings which are loud and usually fun though my realtives are not that many, my mum is an only child.

When i'm in Gaspe, I go to midnight mass. We all have supper on Christmas at the bf's grandparent's house. They have passed on, but it's tradition that the house is opened and everyone comes for supper. I'm really excited for Christmas...I wish my parents would come to Gaspe for Christmas too. We'll be back for New Years to spend with my parents. WE rotate every year, to be fair to both sets of parents.
