Hehe, okays, fine!
Now i've forgotten what i was gonna say.... *rummages through memory* Oh yes! There was a line from Little Women, which i'm glad they included in the 94 film (LOVE that film) where Laurie says "i've always known - i should be part of the March family" to which Amy rebutts with "I do not wish to be loved for my family". Later on of course he professes to love her for her and off they go. But i never fully bought it. Amy had always had a crush on Laurie and he had always sort of loved her a little sis and yes feelings can alter when you get older and suddenly you can see someone anew, but i always worried that Amy was at least in part, just a rebound. The same would have been said had he formed an attatchment to Beth too, except i probably would have been more angry at him over that, hehe. *poor Beth didn't need her feelings triffled with* The novel sort of reads as if Amy and Laurie have met each other as equals now and that this is the perfect relationship for them as a mature couple, but i still get that occassional nagging sense that Laurie still would have prefferred Jo. Even when he comes back from Europe and sees her, following Beth's death, to announce that he's married Amy, there's something there, in my mind at least, that is still that wishful boy wanting Jo to turn around and say he loves him... and that breaks my heart AND makes me angry. While Amy is far from my fav person, i do feel for her if she is some sort of consollation prize. And i adore Laurie but if his heart wasn't ENTIRELY in it, then mabye he should have remained a bachelor- although i do think that what we're meant to glean from his living that lifestyle is that he would have been gambling away his money and being lazy, and Amy at least is good for whipping him into shape and getting him to do work, hehe!
And onto Jo and the professor - that always struck me as just being an idealised example of a "mature relationship" aswell; as if to brush aside what Jo and Laurie had when they were younger and Laurie's passionate proposal and say, now onto serious business. I have nothing against Bahr (or however his name is spelt) although i did always wonder at his age, not that that should be an issue, but still - it bugged me all the same. I'm glad that Jo ended up with an intelligent man who challenged her talents etc. coz she needed that.. Laurie would have perhaps just praised all the time - or if he'd given criticism they would had a big arguement, hehe! I guess at heart Laurie and Jo were just meant to be the best of best friends. But it has to mean something when almost every fan wished Jo had said yes, eh?!
