I´ve heard of the author but I haven´t read the books. I´ll see if I can find one used.

Last semester I had to read an autobiography called Coming of Age in Mississippi: Growing Up Poor and Black in the Rural South by Anne Moody. It was basically about her childhood and then involvment in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s & 60s. I really actually enjoyed it, although some parts seemed to be a bit exagerrated. (By the way, what's the difference between an autobiography and a memoir?)

I think the difference is that a memoir can be about a certain time in your life, or focused on certain facts, whereas an autobiography should cover your entire life in details.

Yeah, when I think about it I think of a memoir to be more of a diary or remembering events and their effects, whereas an autobiography is facts and a whole lifetime rather than just part. Or that's what I think when I hear one or the other mentioned.

I see that Toni Morrison is on the list. She is actually one of my favorite authors of all time, I've read nearly all of her stuff. "The Color Purple" is a great book, although sometimes it's heartbreaking. I've also read "Their Eyes Were Watching God" which is also amazing.

I really enjoyed Their Eyes Were Watching God. The only other one I've read is Native Son - it was the only paper that I got an A on in AP English so I have fond memories of it. I would like to reread both of those since its been awhile and I would like to read some more African-American lit. They teach surprisingly little of it here in the US unless you take a course specifically for it. I think it should just be part of our American lit classes by now even though I understand keeping a separate class as well. I only got to read those two books because I took AP English in high school. No other African American books were read in other lit classes at my school.

Ditto on Their Eyes Were Watching God. I liked that book. Song of Solomon is also really really good.

I just read Beloved by Toni Morrison which could go on that list. I loved Their Eyes Were Watching God and Native Son as well.

Ditto on Their Eyes Were Watching God. I liked that book. Song of Solomon is also really really good. "Song of Solomon" is another one of my favorites. I'd even say it's her best book but I could be wrong, and I love them all.
