Herta Müller received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Has anyone read anything by her? I must admit that I didn't even know her before yesterday.

Nope, doesn't ring any bell... I looked her up on Wikipedia, it says she's only 56 - usually literature Nobel prize winners are much older!

Just today there was an article about her in the paper. I've never read anything by her though. The nobel prize in literature often brings more obscure writers to the forefront of the book world which helps expand reading experiences. Very few german writers are known in North America.

I guess... I thought the purpose of the Nobel Prize was to reward an author's significant contribution to the world of literature, seems to me like there are plenty of other prizes out there for obscure writers...

Lol, now I think about it that's completely true! I'm not sure what Herta Muller has contributed due to the fact I've never even heard of her before

She´s really not well-known or widely read, but I guess being a German-Romanian and growing up with cultural identity problems is what it takes to win the Nobel Prize, critics love diaspora. The committe really went out of their way to make the most debatable decisions this year!

I just find this topic. I loved it: many suggestions of readings in German Literature and as I am really interested in German culture for the moment, it is just perfect for me

Really need to start reading German literature. We are studying a book in class and Im finding it quite hard to understand. i think ill start with kids books or something easy I can actually understand. I actually noticed on amazon there are a lot of gilmore girls books in german more than the 4 they released in english and the language in those was very simple.

There are many nice Children stories in German (for example, fairy tales by Brothers Grimm, by Hoffman, Handersen...). They will be my first reading in German I think I am also reading a German book (but I am reading it in French for the moment) : Jesus liebt mich by David Safier. I checked on amazon and it doesn't seem very difficult in German ;-) I have never read "Gilmore Girls books". Are they worthy reading it?

Oh thats a good idea. The book we are reading in class is titled Ich fuhl mich so fifty fifty and we will also be reading das leben der anderen, which I recommend the film of. I have a book by David Safier also; its called Mieses Karma. I still havnt read it I think it was a best seller a few years back. Eh they are okay. They cover the first season, and a little of the 2nd season. they are all written from Rory's perspective, so at times it feels like you are mising half the story. They follow the episodes very closely and have some colour photos in the middle. Some of the lines are exactly the same as the show but they do have some extra thoughts added in. They're cute but very simple easy read. You can see inside them on amazon.

Oh, that seems great those Gilmore Girls books!! I think I will try to buy them one day because reading GG is something different and I think I could really enjoy it But I think I will read it in English... I prefer reading a book in its original version if I know the languages in question (i.e. if it is an English/French/German book... if not, I can choose the language I want for my reading^^). Therefore, I would read GG in English (the contrary wouldn't sound normal). Yes, David Safier is a best-seller and I think I will add Mieses Karma to my TBR list because it is probably a lot like Jesus likes me and for the moment, I really enjoy this book But for the purpose of reading in German, I will read the fairy tales by the Brother Grimm to begin with... Because each fairy tale is quite short and as I need to check almost every word in the dictionary for the moment (and to check grammar), reading a fairy tale would already take me weeks... But, I hope that I will improve quickly thanks to those readings
