I recently bought "Men and Cartoons" - short stories by Jonathan Lethem. I'm excited to read them.

Has anyone read any short stories by Jack London? Ignorant little me didn't even know he had written any until I stumbled over a collection of them at my parent's house. It has to wait in line to be read, but I look forward to start!

I read some Tolstoi stories which I enjoyed a long time ago... I am not sure about the titles though, cause I read them in Greek... One would be The Kreutzer Sonata and Story of a horse... Also, Anton Chehov has some amazing stories... Again, I am not sure how it translates in English, maybe something like The lady with the dog?

Short stories are fantastic I must admit. lol. They're great for traveling or when you don't have a whole lot of time.

my favorite short stories are by Kate Chopin, she brings such grace and sophistication into her work. You know that European flair that most Americans (including me!!) strive for even though a lot of them are set in the Louisiana, New Orleans area. I love them

I love short stories! Everything by Edgar Allen Poe is good, and I also like Truman Capote's short stories(his "real" books not so much). How To Breathe Underwater is one of my favorite books of short stories. They are pretty disturbing but really good and well written.

My next books of short stories will be The First Forty-nine Stories by Hemingway, a closer friend told me they're absolutely great. I personally can suggest any stories by Edgar Allan Poe (I read Complete Tales And Poems and I think it's a very good book), I also really liked The Steppe And Other Stories by Anton Cechov (..I'm sorry, it's Cekhov in English, isn't it?).

Old thread, but I'll write anyway;) So I'm reading The Portable D.P right now, and she mentions what she thinks are the four best American short stories: The Killers - Hemingway Blue Murder - Wilbur Daniel Steele I'm a Fool - Sherwood Anderson Some like them Cold - Ring Lardner Have any of you read any of these? I'm not sure if I've read The Killers, but in that case that's the only one...
