I am looking for books that have a depressed maincharacter. Kind of like the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I am writing an article for college about being depressed and I thought it would be fun to put some books that deal with the subject in it. Except that I can't really think of a lot...
The article is written for 13 to 19 year olds, so I guess it should be YA suitable.
Do you guys know any?

The first that comes to mind is Holden Caufield in J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye... Oh, and Bella in New Moon, I'd say she's pretty depressed throughout the entire novel!

"Veronika decides to die" by Paulo Coelho...almost every character in that book is depressed in some way, so I guess it matches your description ^^

The first book that came in my mind was Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, but maybe that's too depressive.

Speaking of Bella (and Kristen Stewart), I've seen a book called Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson at library today (I actually suggested it to a girl who was looking for a novel with a main character dealing with sexual abuse). I haven't read it yet so I don't know if it might be a good choice.
