Has anyone read this? It's by Jean Rhys.
I'd love to hear your thoughts! It's one of my favorite books but I can never find anyone to talk about it with!

I just bought it a few weeks ago....I haven't read it yet. I'll be more than willing to talk about it once I've read it though! I think some RBCers have read it already though, too.

I read it a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Of course, it's even better if you've read Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, since the character of Bertha Mason was the inspiration for Rhys's book. It's not exactly a prequel to Jane Eyre though, because Rhys doesn't try to reproduce Brontë's style. She just gives a voice to the "mad woman in the attic", gives a reason for her dementia, which I thought was really interesting.

i have to admit that I didn't like the madwoman in Jane Eyre -- she just irked me. But after reading WSS, I had to go back and re-read JE and had such a different view of Rochester.

Has anyone read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys? I just heard that she linked it to Jane Eyre, kind of writing the story of Bertha... I recently read Wide Sargasso Sea and I think it was ok. I did have too high expectations about it, I'm not sure why, probably because I think Bertha was an interesting character in Jane Eyre...and I was really curious too read Rhys's version of her life. Anyway, I'm glad I read it.

I read Jane Eyre after I read WSS and as a result I couldn't find any sympathy or even like Rochester at all. I think it's better to have read Jane Eyre before!

Ugh. My friend bought it for me, but I just couldn't get through it! Is it really worth a second attempt?
